Leicester built its wealth on hosiery and knitwear, and the factories that drew workers here from the 1960s onward shaped the city that exists today. Those families are now into their third and fourth generation, and many are caring for grandparents who arrived as young adults.
Caring for the generation who came here to work
A great deal of our work in this city is with people in their late seventies and eighties who spent working lives in the textile trade. Repetitive strain, poor factory conditions and decades of shift work leave their mark, and the resulting needs are practical rather than dramatic.
Many of those households have always managed care themselves. When they ring us it is usually because a daughter is now doing twelve hour days herself, not because anyone has given up.
What they want is support that fits around what the family already does. We are there to make that sustainable, not to take it over.
The Golden Mile and the streets around it
Belgrave, Highfields and Evington have their own rhythms, and a care round that ignores them will not work. Mealtimes, festivals, who is comfortable providing personal care and in which language, these are practical scheduling facts rather than sensitivities to be noted and forgotten.
We ask at the first conversation. Where we cannot match what a family needs, we say so plainly rather than sending somebody and hoping it goes well.
Loughborough, Melton and the market towns
Out of the city the county changes quickly. Loughborough has its university and a quiet older population living alongside it. Melton Mowbray, Market Harborough and Lutterworth are settled market towns where families tend to plan support in advance.
Planning ahead always produces better care. If you are weighing it up before there is a crisis, that is the right time to ring.
Hinckley and the west
Closer to Nuneaton and the Warwickshire border, with a lot of households running on warehouse and distribution shift patterns. Care that only works nine to five is no use to them, so we arrange around the rota rather than the office day.
