Anyone can read a rota. The people who lift a care setting are the ones who genuinely care, and hiring for that takes more than checking a qualification. Here is how we think about it, and how you can too.
Vet properly, always
Start with the non negotiables. Enhanced DBS checks, right to work, real references that you actually follow up, and the training the role requires. This is the floor, not the ceiling, and no one should ever step into a vulnerable person’s home or ward without it.
Hire for values, not just tick boxes
Skills can be taught. Warmth, patience and dignity are harder to teach, so hire for them. Ask candidates to describe a time they went out of their way for someone. Listen for how they talk about the people they have cared for. The best carers speak about others with respect even when no one is checking.
Match the person to the setting
A brilliant carer in one setting can struggle in another. Match temperament and experience to the role and the people, and your retention and your care quality both rise. Good matching is quiet work that pays off every single shift.
Support them once they are in
People stay where they feel supported. Supervision, a real point of contact, and a culture that treats staff with the same dignity you expect them to show others, all of this keeps good people and keeps your care consistent.
