Liverpool
People look after their own in this city. Neighbours check in, families stay close, and a great deal of care happens long before anybody rings a provider.
By the time we get a call, a family has usually been coping for a while and is exhausted. What they need is not a lecture about what they should have done sooner. It is somebody reliable turning up when they said they would.
There is also a healthy scepticism here about organisations that arrive promising a lot. That is earned, and we do not argue with it. We would rather turn up consistently for six months than make a speech in week one.
The Wirral
Across the water is a different county in feel, with wide variation between Birkenhead and the villages out towards Heswall. Care plans that work in one do not automatically work in the other.
St Helens, Knowsley and Sefton
Former industrial towns with real health inequality, where long term conditions often start earlier than the national average. Care here frequently begins in someone’s fifties, around a working life rather than a retirement.
Southport at the northern end is older and more settled again, with many people who retired to the coast and have outlived their local network.
