Kent has a long coastline, an ageing population along it, and a stretch of commuter towns at the London end that feel like a different county entirely. Add the Channel ports and you have a place where the pace changes every twenty miles.
The coastal towns
Margate, Ramsgate, Folkestone, Deal and Herne Bay have some of the oldest populations in the south east, along with real deprivation in places that holiday brochures never mention.
A lot of people here retired to the seaside decades ago and are now a long way from their children. The first conversation is often about whether staying at home is still possible at all. We try hard to make the answer yes.
Maidstone, Canterbury and mid Kent
The county town and the cathedral city are steadier, with families who tend to plan rather than react. Canterbury also has a large student population living alongside long standing residents who barely notice each other.
Dartford, Gravesend and the Medway towns
The north west of the county moves at London pace. Denser housing, more people living alone, and hospital discharges that land on families with very little warning.

Rural Kent and the Weald
Out through the Weald and the orchards, journeys take far longer than the map suggests. Rural Kent is the part of the county where a carer running late simply cannot catch up.
