Berkshire holds two very different realities within about twenty miles of each other. There is the Thames Valley money, Windsor, Ascot, the villages out towards Hungerford. Then there is Slough and parts of Reading, where some of the most pressed households in the south east are living.
Care that assumes everyone in Berkshire is comfortable will get it wrong half the time.
Reading and Slough
Both towns are young, busy and highly diverse, and both have families managing care with very little slack. A lot of the people we support here are also working, often shifts, often with children at home as well as a parent who needs help.
Language matters here as it does in London. We ask what is spoken at home and we treat the answer as part of the plan, not a footnote.
Windsor, Maidenhead and the river towns
Out along the Thames the housing is older and often listed, which sounds charming until you need a stairlift or a wet room. Planning restrictions and narrow staircases shape what is actually possible, so we look at the building before we promise anything.
Families here frequently want a great deal of continuity, and they are right to. We keep the same small team on a round wherever we can.
Newbury and the west
West Berkshire thins out quickly into countryside. Journey times stretch, rural broadband is patchy, and a carer cannot make up lost minutes on a country road. We plan rounds with that built in rather than hoping for a clear run.
